Chaos Synopsis: Kvlt ov dementia

Spotting a Sepultura influence in a Brazilian metal band is like spotting nudity in a porno. In other words, it isn’t fucking hard. Metal dudes in Brazil must grow up on a staple diet of eggs, rice and Sepultura. Chaos Synopsis is the latest group to rise from the favelas to strive for metal stardom (actually I don’t know if they’re really from favelas, but it sounds cool so I’m leaving it in).
The first thing noticeable about their music is the crunching riffs which start from the word go. Yes, a clear Sepultura influence here in their thrashier moments, but there is also a fair smattering death metal influence as well. These guys are definitely adept at their instruments and the music is fast and br00tal. I’m nodding my head, enjoying this quite a bit, then the vocals kick in. Oh boy.
What in the fuck is going on with the vocals? I mean, holy shit, are you growling through a cardboard tube? I know that’s what it is, I can hear the echo for fuck’s sake. Who on this planet thinks this is a good idea? What shit-for-brains thought this would be a cool effect? It sounds terrible (not that the vocals are that good to begin with). And what happens when you play live? Will you take the cardboard tube on stage with you? It’s going to be hard for Jairo to play bass and hold his cardboard tube in place at the same time.
OK Rev, deep breaths. That’s better. Let’s continue shall we?
Production wise I feel these guys have also been let down quite a bit. The guitars are certainly meaty, providing just the right amount of crunch, the bass is clearly audible, but the drums and vocals kill it. I’m not sure how much work Fabio Zperandio has done previously, but this here is not a good advertisement for his work.
I’m probably coming across as a bit negative here, but I do feel as though there was quite a good album in the offing here. There’s definite talent in Chaos Synopsis, but these talents may go to waste if they don’t get a better vocalist in, fix the mixing and production, and break the cardboard tube over the head of the idiot who suggested it. And ultimately, that’s the difference between me giving this album and 8 and me giving it a…
